Wanting the Love of a Man
I think one of the hardest challenges of being single is the gnawing desire to just be loved by a man — this feeling that we are just outright missing out on amazing love that could be ours if only we had this wonderful man to love us that we could love in return.
But I just want to redirect those feelings here for a minute and point you to an undeniable fact. You already have great love; in fact, it’s even more than great. Paul wanted us to “get that” when he so emphatically told us to grasp “how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ.” He wanted us to grasp this reality and truly KNOW Christ’s love for us that “surpasses knowledge. “
This love strikes me specifically on occasion… ideally it sticks with me at my core of heart. But honestly, sometimes I forget and go off pining for that man again. What can I say, of course I do! However, a while back I watched a movie called Seven Days in Utopia that brought God’s love for us to the forefront of my heart and mind. I’m continually drawing from it, majorly cherishing it and eager to share the scene with you.
In the movie, the wise old man (played by Robert Duvall, one of my all-time favorites, who even tangos) is mentoring a somewhat hotheaded, struggling up and comer golf pro. After guiding the young man through several life lessons on patience with one’s self and learning to forgive the past hurts we all carry with us, he stops and puts his hand over the young man’s eyes and says, “Son, at any point, you can close your eyes and see His face. You can feel His presence. And you can trust in His love.”
Let that sink in for a minute. God promises to be with you always. He is right there with you and available at every second of every day. He has promised to never leave you. And you can trust that He loves you. The Bible says trust has no fear; perfect love drives out fear. God’s perfect love is… perfect. You can trust His love for you, His perfect love for you.
My dog is a German shepherd rescue, “Angel.” I’ve had her for more than seven years now, and I love her. I just adore her. Sometimes I even get out of bed in the middle of the night to just hug on her (she is my little love bunny). She drives me nuts, sheds all over the place, rolls in duck poop and even put the neighbor’s shitsu in the hospital (long story, some other time…), but I cannot describe the love I have for this four-legged creature. Total love in my heart and well, if you have a pet you know what I mean.
This is the love between a single girl and her dog. Holy cow – on the scale of all scales, how do you think this compares to the love of The Creator and His created child?? (That loved child is you by the way!) I did not create Angel. I am not capable of perfect love. But my love for her is all forgiving and so very real. Just imagine this in contrast with the perfect love our Creator has for us!
You want the love of a man? I totally understand. I really do. And that desire may never go away. But let’s not miss out on this amazing love of our wonderful God – our Creator, our Savior, our Friend. Frankly, no man’s love will ever match what we already have. God’s love for us is so beyond comprehension, because we humans are not even capable of it.
Just remember: at any point of your day or night, you can close your eyes and … See His face. Feel His presence. Trust in His love.
