Do You Know Your Purpose?
Purpose.
There’s nothing more comforting… and terrifying. We have all experienced the turmoil of figuring out why we’re here. Why were we created? What is our role in the grander scheme of everything going on on Earth? Does everyone have a purpose, or are there just a few lucky individuals whose lives are perfectly laid out, leaving the rest of the population out to dry?
As Christians, we know that God has plans for us, even when we don’t know what they are. While this is most certainly a comfort, it’s also a concept that causes many of us to scratch our heads and slip into periods of surging stress. What is my purpose, God? Why did You put me here, now, in this time?
While not knowing your purpose may seem like an obvious dilemma, here are some telling questions you may ask yourself that could indicate a lack of purpose in your life:
- Am I happy?
- Am I fulfilled in what I do?
- Do I feel like I’m constantly clawing my way to the top of my workload or to-do lists?
- Do I feel God’s strength surrounding me, or does my yoke feel painfully heavy?
- Have successes been sweet or left me feeling like a boxer who’s been in the ring far too long?
God has given each of us a purpose, it’s true. None of us were placed on this world to simply fill a space for a few decades. No, we were created with the ability to do amazing, incredible things. For some of us, “purpose” may look like making a groundbreaking medical discovery or founding the next Amazon or Google. For others, “purpose” may look like being the second grade teacher who instills a love of learning in the next Albert Einstein or manufacturing the pieces of equipment this generation’s Nikola Tesla will use to invent the next advance in technology.
For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it[a] will certainly come and will not delay. – Habakkuk 2:3
Your purpose will come. God ordained it, so why would He hide it from you? Rather than try to force what you think your life’s purpose is onto God’s plan for you, wait. Wait for God to open your eyes and make undeniably clear the role you get to play in this chapter of civilization’s history. You may move mountains or you may move a grain of sand. The grandeur of your purpose is not the point; the perfection of His purpose for you is.
Join us this month as we learn about purpose and how to not only discover our unique purpose, but also how we can tune our lives to live in perfect unison with God’s plan for us.
