Happy New Year and welcome to 2018! There's something infectiously exciting about the first day of a new year. Your mind is probably swirling with all kinds of dreams, goals, plans, and overall joy at the promise of hope a new year tends to bring.
The topic of resolutions can become a heated debate between die-hard devotees to those lists of goals, and those who would rather see where the year takes them. Here at 4word, we subscribe to the resolution's sibling: goals. There is a difference, we promise! Goals are defined as "the result or achievement toward which effort is directed; aim; end," and resolutions are defined as "a decision or determination; a resolve: to make a firm resolution to do something." Goals are hyper focused, while resolutions leave a little wiggle room.
Needing some help with figuring out what you want from 2018? Here are some questions to ponder:
- What is one thing I'd like to see make a 180 by the end of the year?
- What is one skill would I like to be able to list on my resume by the end of the year?
- What is one habit I would love to let go of by the end of the year? What habit would I like to install in its place?
- What is one word I want people to use at the end of the year to describe my accomplishments?
"In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps." Proverbs 16:9
Opening up to your dreams and crafting solid goals are impactful and positive steps that anyone can (and should!) take, but at the end of your brainstorming and list-making, you should always check against what you feel God is actually calling you to. This exercise will fluctuate between being wonderfully affirming and aggravatingly gutting. However, if you want this year to be a "success," you need to measure that success against the Creator of all. We can't think of a better unit of measurement, honestly.
Join us this month as we dive deep into this topic of dreams and goals and how we can set ourselves up for healthy and positive success in 2018!
